The Healing Power of Joy

I had the amazing opportunity yesterday to present a laughter yoga class at a nearby retirement community.  I walked in to a group of about 20 or so intrepid  individuals most of who were chair bound, some who could not see or hear.  Yet, there was an air of excitement in the class for what lay ahead in the next hour. Despite the outward appearance,I felt as I looked into each of their faces that I was looking at a tribe of kids with dreams and mischief still hidden in their back pocket.

You could tell their surprise when I talked about the power of laughing without humor and how by just practicing laughter we can feel a sense of being lighter than what is going on around us.  We talked about how this feeling of buoyancy is  about feeling an inner lightheartedness.  One woman shouted,  “I NEED some light-heartedness” and several others nodded.

As we began to laugh, years slipped from their faces and the warmth returned to their eyes.  When I asked them what pastime did they most miss…a quiet man who was shaking  quickly said, “Skiing!” followed by another voice, “skating” and finally echoed by a tearful “snowshoeing”.  Since Laughter Yoga uses a lot of imagery I said, ” Let’s boot up!”  And everyone began to slide on their favorite pair of ski boots, ice skates, or snowshoeing boots.   We sat as upright as possible and began our memory adventure using laughter to share our excitement.

At that moment, the energy completely changed in the room as everyone sat remembering their more able and boundless selves.  There were hoots and hollers, big smiles, and much laughter,  For one moment, through laughter and play, there was no time only truth.  The truth that life is an experience of joy and exploration, that we want to feel light and connected to others and that we carry this power within us.

One woman said, “We should all go into the dining room and start laughing!”  I gave her my full approval.

Upon arriving home, I was reading a friend’s ever witty blog and came upon this video below created by the employees of a hospital in Portland, OR.  They made it to promote breast cancer awareness.  It brought tears to my eyes as you can feel the energy and passion they have for the cause.  It illustrates so well how powerful light-heartedness is when shared openly and boldly with others. By light heartedness, I do not mean making light of something that is deeply serious or difficult.  Instead, it is about allowing the buoyant nature of joy and gratitude to give us strength, hope and grace to see our way through.

And when we are able to allow joy to shine through us, it becomes a gift to those who witness it and perhaps need it most.

Whether it is in a retirement community, in the name of breast cancer awareness, or when facing any situation that feels insurmountable, may we all help each other remember the healing power of joy and laughter.  And may we shine joy with everyone with meet.

Also, in honor of breast cancer awareness, I want to share this project put together by Lance Ekum and Joanna Sutter, Blog4 causein which 150 bloggers, myself included shared stories to help raise funds for breast cancer research.  To learn more or to donate for your copy, please visit the Susan G Komen for the Cure site.

Beautiful post, Katie. Yet anotherexample of the transcendent power of laughter! Thank you for taking me with you through your writing!

Katie,
See, that’s it – you bring joy to others…and it comes back to you tenfold. That’s what I hear in your words today…words that touch upon several things – like the connecting beauty of laughter and joy, and of this idea that in giving we receive. In giving these people a few moments of increased happiness and lightness, I sense that you came away just that way too – happier and lighter (not that I can see you “un”happy…). Katie, keep shining your magnificent light out into the world…it touches people at their core.

And what a fun video – more beauty shining into our world!

Sounds like a fun Laughter Yoga session!

My dear HAHA Sister. You are so great at what you do! This is a moment you will treasure since you’ve discovered again that laughter IS the very best way to connect with our inner joy and you’re helping many people to realize that!
I remember how I felt after my first L.Y. class in a retirement home: I sat in my car, crying for 10 minutes, thanking God and Dr Kataria for giving me the tools and opportunity to bring a little light and joy in their lives…
The world needs us! the world needs YOU darling!
Continue Katie! You’re an inspiration!
Love, joy and laughter
Your HAHA Sister

What a touching and beautiful story, Katie. It warmed my heart (more than my tea warmed my belly this morning!). My favorite line was this one: “…there was no time only truth”

That, right there, said a mouthful about this life, in general.

Thank you for what you do; it’s inspiring, and makes my heart expand in my chest whenever I read about it!

Katie, this whole post made my cry for how sweet you are and how you brought joy into the day of those elderly people, joy which I am sure will live on in them.

I’m not sure why this touched me so much, I guess because we will all be old someday (if we are lucky enough to make it there healthily and with support and love surrounding us,) and to think you gave so deeply of yourself to bring them living memories of things they loved to do, is just the best sweetest, most caring thing I’ve read in a long long time.

Do you have any idea just how special you are??

xo

Sounds like they really needed some good laughter. I love that they suggested to go into the dining room and help others. That’s when laughter is at its best – when we are sharing it with others.

You are changing the world, making it a better place. That’s a gift. I hope more and more opportunities come your way.

Hi Katie:

Awesome post…good to hear how you were able to spread some joy to people that really needed it. Your imagery exercise sounds really cool…reminds me of a few exercises from an old improv class. In any case, I’ve made a conscious decision to laugh more this year…I have this gut feeling that by doing this, it will take care of a lot of things in my life. Cool video too. Have a good day!

I enjoyed reading the account of your day at the retirement community. I hope never to forget to laugh, even when I turn elderly! You are certainly doing great work by reminding all of us to keep our vibes up!! Way to go!

Katie,
This is one of my favorite posts. I can’t wait to read your book! I love what you did in that nursing home. My dad died in July and my mom is still living in the same place. I know the joy they feel when people do programs and music for them.

Your post made me cry as well. And the video, I laughed and thought this is so what the world needs. You do awesome work and you inspire me!

very true, thanks for the post:)

Recently a slightly-past-middle-aged woman who was at one of my speaking programs referred to herself as a “wrinkled kid.” I loved it. It’s proof — as is this post — that we’re all kids, even if we don’t look like the standard model we’re accustomed to seeing :)

Katie West/The Levity Coach January 21, 2010 at 3:03 pm

@ Jannie That means so much to me. So many times I will go to your blog late at night and you give me the fuel to get my project done and make me feel the warm fuzzy inside that we are all in this together. Thank you for being here Jannie.

@Karl I could not agree more-let us all share away!

@Tim Yeah! I love the thought of you laughing more this year! How can things go wrong when that is on our list? May you define your success by your laughter!

Katie West/The Levity Coach January 22, 2010 at 5:53 am

@Evelyn I love that “vibes up!” It may just become my new saying when I find the “grumpys” coming….It kind of reminds me of “Surfs Up!” The reminder to ride the wave of life!

@Tess Thank you for telling me about your parents. That made me cry too. It is so important to remember as I go in and laugh at retirement communities that many of those people are parents and it is a way to bring the love from their children to them..Wow…what a great perspective! Thank you Tess!

@Farouk Thanks for visiting!!!

@Jason Great to see you here as I have been thinking about you guys! “Wrinkled Kid” That is just about the most fabulous thing I have heard all week. Almost like the wrinkles mark all the kid adventures that have been had a long the way.
