15 Minutes with The Levity Project: A Laughter Flash in Portland, Maine

by Katie on July 26, 2009

July15-09 002Thank you all for your emails asking when this video was coming out. If you don’t already know about the 15 minute series, you can learn more here.

On July 15th, a group of people gathered together via word of mouth to create a flash of laughter in a city square in Portland, Maine.  For 15 minutes, they just laughed.  People stared, took double takes, asked questions, and began laughing along.

We did it because laughter is contagious.  Laughter from one person creates ripple effects to another and so on.   I believe we WANT to laugh and that  even in the tough times, we need to laugh.  Laughter is our lifejacket and our oxygen mask.  Now, more than ever, with what is going on with national and world events,  laughter is very much needed to bring us together and to create a sense of buoyancy.

The 15 Minutes with the Levity Project is a series of various social experiments that seek to create levity in public places to create systemic change in the way we see and experience our lives.    Levity is not about changing our situation so much as it is about allowing us to rise above our situation. We become buoyant and lighter than that which surrounds us.

And from this place of lightness, finding our way in our daily life becomes more doable and more possible.  The feeling of lightness offers the perspective we need to make good decisions and the courage to move forward.

Please join us in this exciting movement and add levity to your life and those around you!  Subscribe to our feed, pass the video to those you know, and inquire about how you can join in on the next event.  The next “15 Minute Series”  is August 22nd…contact me to participate or about organizing one where you live.
Peace and Laughter to you all.

Katie,
This is completely awesome, and so cool! You’ve brightened my day today…and I wasn’t even there when this happened.

And I love the way you did the video – with the interviews interspersed with the “project”. So fun to watch!

Such a cool idea. Free, contagious laughter in a public space. What a powerful, beautiful gift to give.

This is a great idea Katie! I wish there was much more of this kind of sound in public spaces than what you normally hear. Keep it up!! Cheers.

This is great material, as you took a beneficial social idea and implemented it, bringing positivity to loads of people. It also serves to remind us that others are not as aloof as we might think when we see them in public.

Katie, what I love about this is your confidence that laughter lightens and brings things into their rightful perspective. You are indeed a pioneer and I’m grateful to have crossed your path.

I LOVED this. It was so great to see you on video, Katie. And I couldn’t help it – I started laughing. And even the band joined in!

I would love to be an active part of The Levity Project. I could see me laughing and laughing and laughing all day afterward, as one of the two ladies in black said — contagious!

I am SO going to make time in my life to be a part of this. How can I not? This is the most beautiful, powerful and EASY form of social change I have EVER witnessed! The video was great, but now I want to experience it in person! Kudos to you, Katie…for having the courage to start a revolution! It IS happening!

It was fun to discover your site from Jenny’s blog because Lance was just talking about you and this Levity Project! In fact, I am interviewing his TONIGHT on my online radio show.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone creates!!
